Short description of Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga is a precise and detailed form of Hatha Yoga developed by BKS Iyengar. This style of yoga places particular emphasis on the precise execution of each yoga pose and the use of props such as blocks and straps to ensure safe and effective practice. Aids are therefore an integral part of Iyengar Yoga. The aim of this style of yoga is to develop strength, flexibility and endurance through carefully structured sequences that are adapted to the student's given conditions and his environment.

Meditation as a widespread element in other yoga styles takes a back seat here. There is also no continuous flow here, such as in Vinyasa Flow Yoga . Practicing yogis can therefore vary relatively freely between the individual asanas. However, the individual poses are held longer than in other yoga styles.

Origin and Meaning of Iyengar Yoga

Named after its founder BKS Iyengar , this style of yoga emphasizes the importance of precise execution of asanas. Since the 1940s, Iyengar has developed a systematic method characterized by mindfulness, high precision and attention to detail in execution. BKS Iyengar is today considered one of the greatest yoga masters of our time. His philosophy is based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as well as some elements of the Hatha Yoga Padripika . He also wrote several basic books about yoga, such as “Light on Yoga” or “Light on Pranayama”:

Target group Iyengar Yoga (suitable for)

Iyengar Yoga is particularly suitable for entering the world of yoga , as the correct execution of the exercises is made easier by the use of aids . The use of such props allows people of all ages and physical abilities to experience the benefits of yoga. But this style of yoga is also very suitable for advanced students who want to perfect familiar asanas or who have physical complaints. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a sweaty workout or dynamic flow, you might want to resort to Ashtanga Yoga , Bikram or Vinyasa Flow .
